Biweekly Update from Brenda Bye, President October 8, 2024

President’s Message

🍂Today’s newsletter is pretty short and sweet. As we enter the final stretch of the year, I’d like to encourage all members to make sure your volunteer and continuing education hours are up to date in the VRS before the end of the month. These numbers are essential for OSU Extension to track the hard work and learning we've accomplished throughout the year. These numbers are also used in reporting to the legislature for fundraising.

At our first fall Membership Meeting on October 21st, we will be starting the meeting with a vote on the 2025 Board of Directors, and it’s important to have your voice heard in shaping the future of our association. You can vote in person or at the Zoom meeting. The link will be on the website soon and will also be sent with the reminder email.

Volunteer Opportunities

These activities have been approved by OSU Extension for volunteer hours

🍂Propagation Workshops at PHS - The plant propagation team has multiple dates available in October and more to come in November. Workshops happen rain or shine so dress for the weather. Find a date that works for you on the Signup Genius

🍂The Kathryn Jones Harrison School Garden Club is launched Tuesdays, 11:00 am- 12:30 pm. Go to the Signup Genius to volunteer. If you sign up, please ensure that you have filled out the district volunteer application at least two weeks prior to the day.

Amanda Tucksen, garden leader and teacher, will also be present during the times students are there to help. If you have any activity ideas for the two age groups (8-10 years old and 5-7 years old) that are quick and simple enough for this recess setting, please let Amanda know!

🍂Neighborhood Plant Kiosk - We are looking for volunteers who would be able to help install the kiosks for the NPK (Neighborhood Planter Kiosk) project. It involves digging a hole for the post, installing it in the ground, and screwing the display to the post. If you or someone you know can help with this, or have questions, please email Anna and anna@growingpeace.net  or call/text 541-301-7993.

🍂Plant Clinic Desk  - Plant Clinics in Oregon have been critical this year in identifying and reporting invasive species. Come and see what questions are coming in this month and keep your horticulture knowledge fresh. There are daytime shifts for both trainees and Certified MGs available daily. Check out the Signup Genius

🍂School Garden Fun! BCMGA is working with three school gardens this year. This is a fun and active way to complete your volunteer hours. Each school garden has a different schedule, leader and plan. Reach out soon to get the ball rolling on background checks through OSU Extension and the Corvallis School District.
